At the time of the 1891 England Census Annie Louisa Smith, age 32, born in Ewhurst Sussex, and husband John Smith, age 39, born in Dundee Scotland, labourer at saw mill, were living at 15 Cromwell Street, Stranton Durham. With them was Annie's daughter Alice Maud M Johnson (9) of Ashford Kent, scholar.

STAPLECROSS.
THE LATE MRS. A. L. SMITH.—The funeral took place Ewhurst on Tuesday of Mrs. Ann Louisa Smith, of Staplecross, who passed away at Battle, after a long illness, on Thursday last week, at the age of 73 years. The service at the Parish Church was conducted by the Rector of Ewhurst (the Rev. A. Morrison). The mourners were: Mr. W. Newick (brother), Mrs. R. Muggridge, Messrs. W. P. and A. Smith, Mrs. Cogger, Mr. and Mrs. Lavender, Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Maynard. The funeral arrangements were in the capable hands of Mr. F. Jempson, of High Street, Battle.
