In 1891 David Hicks, age 17, gave his birthplace as Dunton Green. At this time he was living in Chelsfield Kent working as a horse carter.
On 25 May 1906, David, aged 32, farm bailiff, from Kent, arrived in Halifax Nova Scotia per S.S. Lake Erie. He was accompanied by wife Barbara, children: Joseph (4), Lillian and Violet. The final destination was Thamesford Ontario Canada. They were traveling on a British Bonus. Michigan, USA.

On 11 Feb 1910, David Hicks and his family arrived in Detroit Michigan. He gave his birthplace at this time as Tunbridge Wells Kent.
