At the time of the 1911 England Census Ellen Jane Chapman, age 32, born in Brighton, mother of one child, totally deaf and dumb, and husband of 3 years Ernest Edmund Chapman, age 33, totally deaf and dumb, tailor (maker), were living at 46 Essex St., Brighton. With them were son Ernest Arthur Chapman (under 8 months) of Brighton, and [Ellen's] brother James Lee (29) of Brighton, totally deaf and dumb, handyman at deaf school.
