Town's Oldest Resident Looks Back.

MR. MATTHEW DIXON.

Mr. Matthew William Clement Dixon, Calne's oldest resident, can look back 90 years, but you would never think it to look at him.

He celebrated his birthday last Friday, but his clear blue eyes, rosy cheeks and upright carriage suggest a man 30 years younger. He takes long walks every day, and looks good for a century at least.
Mr. Dixon was born at Hillmarton on 8 November 1843, and was the son of Mr. Eli Dixon, who carried on business there as a tailor. His father died when he was just over a year old. He was educated at Calne Middle School, on the Green which was the site of the present Secondary School. He used to walk from Hillmarton—three miles or more—bring his dinner and walk back each evening.

In 1859 he came to Calne and was apprenticed to Mr. Stiles Jefferys, a draper, through the good offices of Sir Thomas Henry Allen Poynder, father of Sir John Dixon Poynder and the then Lord of the Manor of Hillmarton. Mr. Jefferys lived in the house now occupied by Mr. Dixon, who now carries on a similar business with his sons. On Mr. Jeffery's sale of the business, Mr. Dixon went to work for Mr. J. R. Neeve in Church Street. He eventually purchased the business.

Changes at Calne

Mr. Dixon was married at Great Fresdernek Street Chappel, Cardiff, in 1876 to Miss Hannah Llewellyn, of Cardiff, by the Rev. J. Cynddylan. There are three sons living. Messrs. W. C [sic]. and B. I. Dixon, who still carry on business in Calne, and Mr. G. L. Dixon, who has a drapery store at Tewkesbury. When his sons returned from the war in 1919, Mr. Dixon retired.....
