In 1847 John Roberts was a beneficiary of his father's will, receiving his copyhold tenement on about three acres in Halwin in the parish of Wendron.

In 1851 John Roberts, aged 27, born in Wendron Cornwall, tin miner, and wife Elizabeth Roberts, aged 27, born in Wendron, were living in Halwin, Wendron. With them were children (born in Wendron): Elizabeth (6), William (4), Nan (1).

In 1861 John Roberts, aged 36, born in Wendron, tin miner, and wife Elizabeth Roberts, aged 36, born in Wendron, were living in Halwin, Wendron. With them were children: William Henry (13), tin miner, Ann (11), schollar, John (8), schollar, Thomas (5), schollar, Joseph (3), schollar.
