"MR. GEORGE HOLMES
The sudden passing of Mr. George Holmes on Sunday morning at the age of 58 years, came as a great shock to the community. He was apparently in his ordinary health when he retired on Saturday night, and he passed away peacefully in his sleep. A Mudgee native, the late Mr. Holmes was associated with the postal service in his early days, and was among those who answered the call when the first World War broke out. Upon returning home after lengthy active service, he engaged in various business ventures. For a period he was prominent in the management of a mixed establishment in Lewis Street, and later conducted a bakery and hotel. When the Rehabilitation Centre was established in town, he became the manager in charge, and under his able guidance the venture made great progress. For a great number of years he occupied responsible positions in the Mudgee Returned Soldiers' League, and devoted himself with zeal and ability to the promotion of the welfare of returned men, many of whom had good reason to thank him. Always approachable, he met the returned 'diggers' with sympathy and understanding, and deemed it a privilege to help solve their problems, and these were many over the years. Altogether, there were but few Mudgee men more greatly admired and trusted than the late Mr. Holmes, and right throughout the district there is deep sorrow at his untimely passing. He is survived by a widow, one son William (Melbourne), and a daughter, Mrs. Sheelagh Hadrick (Adelaide), to whom, in their hour of great sorrow, will be extended the deepest sympathy of every one in the community. There will be a solemn Masonic service prior to the funeral to-morrow (Tuesday) afternoon, while the R.S.L. will also gather to pay its respects to a true comrade. The arrangements are being carried out by Messrs. Eastaugh and Carroll." 5
