In May 1874 Thomas John Spicer, farmer, was co-executor of his father's Will.
At the time of the 1891 England Census Thomas J Spicer, age 41, born in Marden Kent, agricultural labourer, and [2nd] wife Hannah Maria, age 42, born in Barming Kent, were living in Lenham Heath, Kent. With them were children (born in Lenham Heath): Annie Maria* (9), Emma (8), Thomas (6), and Nelly (4).
* Hannah's daughter by William Pettett, whom she married in 1875. William died in 1879. See further note under the 1911 Census entry below.
In Jan 1896 Thomas John Spicer was present at the marriage of his daughter Lily Spicer to Joseph Gains in Charing Heath, Kent.
At the time of the 1901 England Census Thomas J Spicer, age 52, born in Marden Kent, agricultural labourer, and wife Maria (52) of Maidstone, were living in Wilks Farm, Charing Kent. With them were children (born in Lenham): Thomas (16), agricultural? labourer, and Nelly (14).
At the time of the 1911 England Census Thomas John Spicer, age 63, born in Marden Kent, farm labourer, and wife of 40 years* Hannah Maria, age 62 (mother of 6 children, 1 deceased*), were living at 26 Gladstone Road, Maidstone.
* Unable to locate a marriage record for Thomas John Spicer and Hannah Maria Pettett (née Quaif), which begs the question as to whether they formally married. If Thomas's first wife, Sarah, had lived, they would have been married the stated 40 years in 1911. Thomas and Sarah had two children, one of whom died young in 1875. The GROE birth index records only three children of Thomas and Hannah. To this number we can add Hannah's daughter Annie by her first husband, William Pettett. Hence it appears that the number of children indicated in the 1911 Census is the sum of Thomas's children by Sarah, Hannah's daughter by William, and Thomas's and Hannah's children, six in total.
