At the time of the 1891 England Census Edward Gard, age 33, born in New Brompton Kent, writer, and wife Sarah J, age 33, born in Newington London, were living 76 Telephone Rd., Portsea Hampshire. With them was son Harold (6 mo) of Portsmouth.

At the time of the 1901 England Census Edward G Gard, age 43, born in New Brompton Kent, writer H. M. Dockyard, and wife Sarah J, age 43, born in Newington London, were living at 74 Telephone Rd., Portsmouth Hampshire. With them were son Harold A E (10) of Portsmouth, and sister-in-law Josephine E Treliving (39) of Old Brompton Kent, single, dressmaker (own account).
