At the time of the 1851 England Census Jane Usher, age 24, born in Rainham Kent, was working as a house servant in Nile Terrace, Gillingham Kent.

At the time of the 1861 England Census Jane Gard, age 34, born in Rainham Kent, and husband William J Gard, age 29, born in Dartmouth Devon, painter, were living in Gillingham Kent. With them were children (born in Brompton Kent): William H (6), Edward G (3) and Reuben J (1).

At the time of the 1881 England Census Jane Gard, age 54, born in Lower Rainham Kent, and husband William J Gard, age 49, born in Dartmouth Devon, leading man of painters, were living at 23 Stafford St., St. Mary Magdalene, New Brompton Kent. With them was son Reuben J (21) of New Brompton, painter in dockyard.
