At the time of the 1901 England Census Frederick E. Message, age 22, born in Selmeston Sussex, assistant butcher, was with his maternal grandmother Naomi Fiest, age 74, born in South Malling Sussex, widow, in New Town, Ringmer Sussex.

At the time of the 1911 England Census Frederick Edgar Message, age 32, born in Selmeston Sussex, butcher, and wife of 9 years Edith Mary, age 29, born in Waldron Sussex (mother 3 children, 1 deceased), assisting in the business, were living in The Chestnuts Barns Green, West Horsham Sussex.
