At the time of the 1841 England Census Matthew Hale, aged about 30, born in the county, agr lab, was living in Old Court, Wootton Bassett Wilts. With him were daughters Elizabeth (8), Lucy (7) and Mary Ann (5).
At the time of the 1851 England Census Matthew Hale, aged 38 [sic], born in Wootton Bassett Wilts, widower, agricultural laborer, was living in Old Court, Wootton Bassett. With him was daughter Mary (17) of Wootton Bassett, agricultural laborer. Nextdoor was widow Mary Tarrant (60) whom Matthew married a few months later.
At the time of the 1861 England Census Matthew Hale, aged 53, born in W Bassett Wilts, labourer, and wife Mary, aged 40, born in W Bassett, were living in Old Court, Wootton Bassett.
