In November 1834 James Barrow was present at the marriage of his brother Richard Barrow to Sarah Roades in Heathfield Sussex.

At the time of the 1851 England Census James Barrow, aged 45, born in Heathfield Sussex, shoemaker, and wife Mary, aged 35, born in Seddlescombe Sussex, were living in Fir Cottage, Waldron Sussex. With them were children (born in Heathfield): Ellen (7), Emily (4), Esther (2) and William (3 months).

At the time of the 1861 England Census James Barrow, aged 57, born in Heathfield Sussex, journeyman shoemaker, and wife Mary, aged 40, born in Seddlescombe Sussex, were living in Ham Lane, Burwash Sussex. With them were children Ellen (17) of Heathfield, house servant, Stephen (9) of Heathfield, scholar, and James (6) of Waldron.

At the time of the 1871 England Census James Barrow, aged 69, born in Heathfield Sussex, cordwainer, and wife Mary, aged 56, born in Seddlescombe Sussex, were living in Runt & Son Rd., Heathfield. With them were son Henry (9) of Heathfield, scholar, grandchildren (born in Heathfield) William Barrow (4) and Ellen Barrow (4). Lodging were [son-in-law] William Hollands (30) of Battle, ag lab, and his wife Ellen Hollands (27) of Heathfield.

James Barrow of Heathfield died aged 79 years (burial record). This is incorrect and can be traced to a clerical error. The GROE death index indicates James was 69 when he died, the age he provided at the Census taken earlier in the year. With each Census James increasingly overstated his age. He was closer to 66 years old when he died.
