John Blackman of Bexhill died aged 74 years (burial record).

-------------------------

Death of Mr. Blackman.—Following closely on the demise of the master of the Bexhill Harriers comes the death of Mr. John Blackman, one of the oldest and most constant followers of the pack. The deceased formerly occupied Grove Farm, Hooe, but for years had lived, retired from business, at Stafford House, in the High Street of the old village of Bexhill. He was a very eccentric man, and was devoted to the chase. His last mount, a grey mare, was pensioned off when her master no longer needed her, with orders that if she lived so long she was to be shot on the day he died. The old man's wish was respected, but after all narrowly escaped being waived. The mare had become very old and as her owner had been confined to the house for years, and was never likely to see the animal again, it was resolved to shoot her. The merciful sentence was to have been carried out on the 16th inst., and was only casually delayed till the next day, on the morning of which, about nine a.m., the old man died. He was in his 74th year.
