ASHFORD.

INQUEST.—On Wednesday last an inquest was held before W. Carttar, Esq., coroner for Surrey, on the body of Mr. Jehu Joy Hunt, of the Clifton Arms, Clifton-road, South Norwood. The deceased was a native of Ashford, and he and his family are very well known here. He was for many years landlord of the Bricklayers' Arms Inn, New-street, Ashford, and he also carried on general stores, and a horse-slaughtering establishment. In consequence of bruises being found upon his body, it was thought at first that he had been injured in an encounter with some person, but such does not seem to have been the case. Mr. Shapland, Thornton-heath, surgeon, deposed that he first attended deceased on Saturday week last. He complained of great pain in the chest, and incapacity to use his left arm. He had a severe blow over the third, fourth, and fifth ribs, on the left side, close to the armpit. He said that he came home the night previous very late, and after sitting by the fire for some time he went to bed, and found he was in great pain; he thought he must have hurt himself by falling on the fender, but he could not account for it. On Wednesday erysipelas set in on the front of the chest, and he died on Saturday night. Witness was quite satisfied that he had received an injury which caused erysipelas and death. The excitement caused that night might have brought on incipient apoplexy, and he might have fallen and not have recollected it. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidental death."
