DEATH OF MR. G. HUTSON.
A link with the old Redhill was broken on Monday of last week when Mr. George Hutson, formerly of Warwick-road, Redhill, died, following a stroke, at the age of 81, at his daughter's residence at West-street, Dorking. Mr. Hutson was nominated to the position of post messenger from Redhill to the Philanthropic Schools so long ago as November, 1862, his certificate of qualification being received at the General Post Office in January of the following year. When he began his duties there was but one other employee there engaged in a similar capacity. Later he rose to the position of head postman, retiring early in 1902. In this connection he was the recipient of a handsome gold watch, bearing a suitable inscription, in recognition of his long and honourable service and as a token of the esteem in which he was held by the Postmaster and staff.
A PATTERN TO FOLLOW.
The then Postmaster, Mr. D. R. Noble, paid, on this occasion, an eloquent tribute to the devotion to duty that had marked Mr. Hutson's long career and to the unblemished record of forty years' public service—the fact that Mr. Hutson had been awarded six good conduct stripes was in itself a striking testimony of meritorious service, often performed under trying and difficult conditions. Mr. Hutson's official career was a pattern for any young man to follow. His departure was a matter of sincere regret to all of them, but to none, perhaps, so much as to the members of the outdoor staff. Mr. Gilbert had also testified to the upright character and excellent qualities of the late head postman, and had said that it was always a pleasure to note the thoroughness with which he performed his duties. It was, he thought, a striking fact that notwithstanding his very early and very late attendances, Mr. Hutson had not, to his knowledge, been a minute late on any single occasion during the previous twenty years.
After the death of his wife, Mr. Hutson went to Dorking, and had, prior to his decease, been suffering from a weak heart.
INTERMENT AT REIGATE.
The funeral took place at the Reigate Parish Church on Friday, the service being taken by the Rev. Saunders. At the interment, which took place beside his wife in the cemetery, the Foresters' service was read by Bro. W. Jarrett. Among the mourners were Miss H. Hutson (daughter), Mr. H. Hutson (son), Miss R. Hutson (daughter), Mr. R. Hutson (brother), Mrs. H. Hutson (daughter-in-law), Miss Cox (niece), Mr. J. Hutson (nephew), Mrs. Remnant (niece), Mr. Remnant (nephew), Miss Caston, Miss Stenning, Mrs. Bellingham, Miss Holmwood and Bros. G. Coomber, J. Groutt, C. Godbeer, E. Funnell, G. Gabriel, C. Simmonds, Gear and H. Fuller, representing the "Forresters." ....
