Isabelle D' ANJOU, Queen of Jerusalem

   Research Notes:

She is named by William of Tyre (Continuator) who records her parentage and, in a later passage, records her mother's statement at the time of the annulment of her first marriage that Isabelle was only eight years old when that marriage took place. Caffaro names "filiam unam…Ysabella" as the child of "rex Amarricus" and his second wife "Maria neptis imperatoris Manuelis, filiam Iohannis protosauasto…nepos imperatoris Manuelis ex fratre suo" and that they had. Her first marriage was arranged in 1180 by her half-brother King Baudouin IV in an attempt to heal the breach between the Ibelin and Courtenay families. The Lignages d'Outremer record that "Hamfrei le tiers" married "la reyne Ysabiau" but that they were separated and that he died without heirs. Raymond Count of Tripoli promoted her candidacy as queen in 1186, when he opposed the succession of her half-sister Queen Sibylle. However, her husband submitted to Queen Sibylle, which put an end to the plan. She became heir to the throne in 1190 after the death of her half-sister Queen Sibylle. Her first marriage was annulled against her wishes and she was married to her second husband on the advice of her mother.

She was crowned in [Jan] 1198 at Acre as ISABELLE Queen of Jerusalem with her fourth husband. "Aymericus…Jerusalem Latinorum rex nonus et rex Cypri" granted rights to the commune of Marseille, with the consent of "Ysabelis uxoris mee…quamdam regis Amalrici filia", by charter dated Oct 1198. After the death of her fourth husband in Jan 1205, Queen Isabelle assumed personal authority over the government of Jerusalem.

Isabelle married Honfroy IV DE THORON Seigneur de Thoron, son of Honfroy III DE THORON and Stephaine DE MILLY heiress of Oultrejourdain, in Nov 1183. (Honfroy IV DE THORON Seigneur de Thoron was born about 1166 and died after 1192.)

Isabelle also married Corrado DI MONFERRATO Marchese di Monferrato, son of Guglielmo V "il Vecchio" DI MONFERRATO Marchese di Monferrato and Jhutta VON BABENBERG, on 24 Nov 1190. (Corrado DI MONFERRATO Marchese di Monferrato was born about 1146 and died on 28 Apr 1192 in Tyre.)

Isabelle also married Henri II DE CHAMPAGNE comte de Champagne (1181-1197), son of Henri I "le Liberal" DE CHAMPAGNE Comte de Champagne (1152-1181) and Marie CAPET of France, on 5 May 1192 in Acre, Palestine. (Henri II DE CHAMPAGNE comte de Champagne (1181-1197) was born on 29 Jul 1166 and died on 10 Sep 1197 in Acre, Palestine.)

Isabelle also married Amaury (Amalric) II DE LUSIGNAN King of Cyprus & Jerusalem (1197-1205), son of Sn Hugues VIII "le Vieux" DE LUSIGNAN and Burgondie DE RANÇON Dame de Fontenay, in 1198.
