In 1294 he was going beyond the seas by the King's command in attendance of Eleanor, the King's daughter, lately married to Henri, Count of Bar. The same year he was heir to his cousin, Cecily de Ferrers, wife of Godfrey de Beaumont, by which he inherited the manor of Bugbrooke, Northamptonshire. In 1294 he had a licence to demise the manor of Chartley, Staffordshire held in chief to Robert de Bures for life at an annual rent of £30, in exchange for Bures, Suffolk, granted to him in fee simple by the said Robert. In 1297 he was going to Brabant by the King's command in attendance on Margaret, the King's daughter, wife of Jean, Duke of Lorraine and Brabant. He was the principal supporter of the Earls of Hereford and Norfolk in the quarrel with the king in 1297.
He was summoned to Parliament from 6 Feb 1298/9 to 19 Dec 1311, by writs directed Johanni de Ferariis, Ferrariis, or Ferers, whereby he is held to have become Lord Ferrers. He was summoned to serve against the Scots in 1299-1301, 1308-1310. In 1300 they received a papal dispensation to remain in marriage, he and his wife's 1st husband being related in the 3rd degree of kindred. In 1301 he petitioned the Pope to allow him to borrow from prelates and ecclesiastics the money needed to redeem his father's estates, but was barred from the king from pursuing a cause concerning a lay fief in an ecclestiastical court. In 1304 he went overseas in the retinue of his cousin Humphrey de Bohun, Earl of Hereford and Essex. He was summoned to attend the coronation of King Edward II 18 Jan. 1307/8.
