Abbot John Arthur, 87, Chanute, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 15, 1918, in rural Chanute, the son of William John and Mable Vivian Arthur. He completed eighth grade at Union Valley and graduated from Chanute High School.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945, serving in the 864th Engineers Aviation Battalion in the South Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze service star, World War II Victory Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
After the service, he and his father together ran their farming operation and dairy farm. He retired in 1967 and built a home in Chanute. He worked at Nu-Wa Campers until 1982.
He was a member of Westview Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
On Dec. 6, 1970, he married Tina Lou Flint in Joplin, Mo. She died in January 1996.
Survivors include a sister, Lena Jane Wiles, Madera, Calif., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by six brothers and a sister.
