At the time of the 1841 Scotland Census John Shaw, aged about 20, born in Ayrshire Scotland, farmer, was living in Chlachrie, Girvan Ayrshire. Present was [mother] Jean Shaw (45) of Ayrshire, sister Isabella Shaw (25), brother William Shaw (15), [niece] Margret McCall (3).
At the time of the 1851 Scotland Census John Shaw, aged 30, born in Girvan Ayrshire, farm labourer, as working for John Fergusson, farmer of 309 acres, in Penmore, Maybole Ayrshire.
John Shaw and wife Janet, arrived in New South Wales, Australia per the vessel Hannah Moore on 6 May 1860.

Will of John Shaw late of Mudgee, freeholder. 3
This is the last Will and Testament of John Shaw of Denison Street Mudgee in the Colony of New South Wales. I John Shaw hereby revoke any and all previous Wills made by me. I direct that my house and its belongings together with such revenue as may be derived from the said property in Denison Street Mudgee shall be the property of my wife Janet Shaw during her lifetime. And I further direct that the said property in Denison Street Mudgee be given to my son William on the decease of my wife subject to the payment by my son William of the sum of one hundred and fifty pounds (£150) to my daughter Janet Cassimer. I hereby appoint my son William and Charles Cassimer my son in law Executors of this my last Will. Signed in our presence and in the presence of each at Denison Street Mudgee on this the twenty third day of November 1896.

Probate of the last Will and Testament of the abovenamed deceased granted to William Shaw of Mudgee, newspaper proprietor, and Charles Casimir of Mudgee, bricklayer, the Executors in Will named. Testator died at Mudgee on the 29th November 1896. Estate sworn at £520. C. D. Meares, Proctor.
