1 In The Visitations of the County of Cornwall, p. 546, the wife of John Vivian is called "Mary Ann, da. of . . . . . . Banfield." This is incorrect inasmuch as there is neither a marriage record for John Vivian and Mary Ann Banfield nor a birth/baptism record for Mary Ann Banfield in Devonport about 1798. John actually married to Mary Ann Toms in Falmouth in 1822, and it is worth noting that one of the witnesses was a Joseph Banfield, and of course Mary Ann's eldest son's first given name was Banfield. Furthermore, Mary Ann was christened in Stoke Damarel Devonshire (which adjoins Devonport); her parents were married in 1786 in Falmouth, had children there until 1793, whereafter they were in Devonport having children from 1796 to 1808 (all christened in Stoke Damarel), the second-youngest of whom was named Thomas Banfield Toms.
