"John died in a coal mine accident. The newspaper reported: "About 11 o'clock last Sunday three men were smothered to death in No. 2 mine at Spring Valley. They were John Eustice, pit boss, and his men, Nelson P. Ekeyson and Jacob Williamson. A fire had broken out in a drift in the mine and had been shut in to smother by doors built on either side. The fire was near the center of a drift at right angles to the main roadway. The rear of the fire could be reached through another drift. Mr. Eustice, who was in the roadway with a number of his men, said, 'Boys, let's take a look at the fire. Who will go with me?' Ekeyson and Williamson volunteered and they started on the perilous mission. The bodies of the volunteers were found near the roadway, while the corpse of Eustice, who had led them, lay a considerable distance down the drift. Mr. Eustice was about 40 years of age and one of the most popular men in Spring Valley. He leaves a frail little wife and six children, the youngest born last January. He leaves them destitute with the exception of $1,000 insurance in the Foresters." 2
