Cecily Marowe
- Born: Est 1460, London, Middlesex, England
- Married:
- Died: After 1527
Research Notes:
Philipot, the Kentish antiquary, in a Worsley pedigree listed "Custancia" among Otewell Worsley's daughters but did not know her husband's name although he knew that she had a daughter and heiress, whom he miscalls Elizabeth, who was the wife of Hugh Welden. The will of Thomas Marowe, made in 1505, mentions his niece Cecile Welden, daughter of his brother William, and Lady Leigh (Isabel Worsley) left a legacy to "my niece Weldon" in 1527. 1

The general consensus among scholars is that Cecily married Hugh Weldon (senior) who was a sewer in the court of Henry VII (r. 1485-1509). However, there is a chronological problem here. We know from the records that Hugh Weldon Sr. had a son of the same name who moved to Horsleydown in Surrey where, it is speculated, he engaged in the wool trade, although (unless there’s evidence to the contrary) there is no reason to assume that he didn't also inherit his father's profession as a sewer for the royal court, especially as some sources say Hugh Weldon (senior) was sewer during the reigns of both Henry VII and Henry VIII. The chronological problem can be summarised as follows: it is known from the Harleian manuscripts that Hugh Weldon Jr. had a daughter Elizabeth (who married William Billing) and a son Edward Weldon who later became an M.P. Elizabeth Weldon and William Billing had a number of children born before 1510 including Jane who was born c. 1505. Jane married Anthony Skynner in or before 1533. As such, Jane's mother, Elizabeth Weldon, would have been born between 1470 and 1480. This indicates that Elizabeth's father, Hugh Weldon of Horsleydown, was born probably between 1450 and 1460. This points to Hugh's father of the same name having been born between 1420 and 1430. Now, Cecily who married Hugh Weldon was still living in 1527. So, it seems unlikely that she was the wife of Hugh Weldon senior. It makes more sense if Cecily married Hugh Weldon Jr. rather than Hugh Weldon Sr. It is possible that there is a confusion between the two Hugh Weldons. As such, Cecily is shown here as the wife of Hugh Weldon Jr.
