"Joseph C. Lawinger, 89, of Platteville died Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Manor Care Health Services, Platteville.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May16, 2013 at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Rev. Dave Flanagan will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville, where military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Melby Funeral Home & Crematory, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Thursday. Memorials may be made to the Joseph C. Lawinger Memorial Fund. Online condolences can be made at www.melbyfh.com

Joe was born on March 20, 1924 in Kendall Twp., Lafayette County the son of John and Mary (Pittz) Lawinger. He was united in marriage to Avis Vivian on June 1, 1946 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dodgeville. Avis preceded Joe in death on October 25, 2012. He enlisted in the United States Army in February 1943 serving three years where he spent most of his enlistment in China, Burma and India (C.B.I.). Joe graduated from Wisconsin Institute of Technology (Mining School) in 1949 and worked for the City of Platteville until 1955. He worked with the Lonsberg Company from 1955 to 1964. In 1964 he established Joe Lawinger, Inc. Construction Company in Platteville that he owned and operated until 1985 in which he sold his company to his two sons, Tom and Mark. Tom and Mark still own and operate Lawinger Bros. Construction Company in Platteville which is in its 50th year of operation. Joe operated Law-N-Oak farm in Mifflin Twp., Iowa County raising beef cattle for many years. He served on the Platteville City Council from 1986 – 1996 as a city alderman. He was a member of VFW Post #5274 and C.B.I. Veterans Association. Joe and Avis enjoyed getting out together in Platteville, Cuba City and Belmont doing breakfast with friends at local eateries.

Joe is survived by four children, Mary “Kay” (James) Langkamp of Weston, WI; James “Louie” (Donna) Lawinger of Menominee Falls, WI; Thomas (Joan) Lawinger and Mark (Sue) Lawinger all of Platteville; 9 grandchildren, Lisa (Mark) Jessup, James (Kari) Langkamp, Jay (Gina) Langkamp, Jeff (Amy Langkamp, Jaime (Jason) Bell, Jess Lawinger, Elizabeth Lawinger, Julia Lawinger, Nathan (Megan) Lawinger; 14 great-grandchildren, Sarah, Allison and Amanda Jessup, Graham and Anne Langkamp, Jonathon and Catherine Langkamp, Madelyn, Isabelle and Logan Langkamp, Jacob and Joshua Bell and Brady and Brooke Lawinger; two sisters, Sister Virgine (Dorothy) Lawinger of Germantown, WI; Virginia Lawinger of Oconomowoc, WI; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant granddaughter, grandson, Jeremy John Langkamp in 1984, brothers, Ralph, Raymond and Edward." 2
