"Avis Vivian Lawinger, 89, of Platteville died on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Manor Care, Platteville. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2012 at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville. Rev. David Flanagan will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. Friends may call from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, or from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Avis was born on August 12, 1923 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin, the daughter of Thomas Henry “Harry” and Aletha Genevieve (Symons) Vivian. She was united in marriage to Joseph Charles Lawinger on June 1, 1946 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dodgeville. Avis graduated from Dodgeville High School and worked as a telephone operator at the Dodgeville Telephone Company for one year. She graduated from Platteville Teacher’s College in 1944 and taught school for one year at Ridgeway Grade School. After she was married Avis was a homemaker and raised four children until doing secretarial work for Joe Lawinger, Inc. She became involved in genealogy after her children were raised, working many hours compiling the family history of her family as well as that of her husband. After suffering a stroke in 1980, she enjoyed the contact and assisting other’s with their genealogy questions. Avis’ favorite pastime was playing bridge and treasured times were spending time with her family.

Avis is survived by her husband, Joseph of Platteville; four children, Mary “Kay” (James) Langkamp of Weston, WI; James “Louie” (Donna) Lawinger of Menominee Falls, WI; Thomas (Joan) Lawinger and Mark (Sue) Lawinger all of Platteville; 9 grandchildren, Lisa (Mark) Jessup, James (Kari) Langkamp, Jay (Ginna) Langkamp, Jeff (Amy Langkamp, Jaime (Jason) Bell, Jess Lawinger, Elizabeth Lawinger, Julia Lawinger, Nathan (Megan) Lawinger; 14 great-grandchildren, Sarah, Allison and Amanda Jessup, Graham and Anna Langkamp, Jonathon and Catherine Langkamp, Madelyn, Isabelle and Logan Langkamp, Jacob and Joshua Bell and Brady and Brooke Lawinger; brother, Ross (Jean) Vivian of Dodgeville. Avis was preceded in death by her parents, an infant granddaughter in 1973, grandson, Jeremy John Langkamp in 1984." ¹
