Cte Gérard D' AUVERGNE

[Mathilde] CAROLING d'Aquitaine 1

  • Married:

  Research Notes:

Her affiliation is indicated by the Vita Hludovici which names "Gerardus…comes et gener quondam Pippini necnon Ratherius similiter comes Pippini gener". If this is correct, the two counts were much older than their wives. Some authors have therefore suggested that "brothers-in-law" is a more accurate translation of generes and that the two counts were therefore married to two daughters of Emperor Louis I. Settipani argues that this is incompatible with the context in which the term is used in the Vita. The Vita Sancti Geraldi Compendium names "Mathildem filiam Pippini Aquitaniæ regis…Geraldi aviam" and his parents "patre Geraldo Auriliaci comite…matre Adaltrude" when recording the birth of "Geraldum" in 855. 2

  Marriage Information:

[Mathilde] married Cte Gérard D' AUVERGNE, son of Guérin D' AUVERGNE et de Poitou. (Cte Gérard D' AUVERGNE was born about 800 in Auvergne, France and died on 25 Jun 841 at the Battle of Fontenay-en-Puisaye, Yonne, Bourgogne, France.)
