Herbert was severely retarded. After his mother's death, his father's remarriage, and Lilian's marriage, there was no one to care for him. He entered Newcastle Psychiatric Hospital 20 Jul 1907. He was transferred to Peat Island Hospital Jan 1912, where he remained until his death in 1941. ¹
