SMITH.—March 25, at Agates House, Gardner street, Hurstmonceux, Ann, the beloved wife of George Smith, aged 41.

Surrey Gazette, 28 Mar 1889, p. 3; Eastbourne Chronicle, 30 Mar 1889, p. 4

--------------------------

Ann Elizabeth Smith, wife of George Smith of Agates House, died of consumption aged 41 years (M. I.). 3

Note that Ann's age when she died (41) gives her a birth year of 1848, a year after her parents were married. Ann gave her age as 18 when she married in 1864, meaning she was born about a year before her parents' marriage. The latter would appear to be correct given she was known as Ann Elizabeth Brett Colbran, Colbran being her mother's maiden-surname. The GROE index for Ann's children all show the mother's maiden-surname as either Colbran or Collbran. There are no entries in either the Herstmonceux or Wartling baptismal registers for Ann or her sister Caroline, nor in the GROE birth index. Ann was probably 42 or 43 when she died.

  Marriage Information:

Ann married George Smith, son of Thomas Smith and Ann Shadwell, on 8 Aug 1864 in Herstmonceux, Sussex, England. (George Smith was born about 1836 in Herstmonceux, Sussex, England, christened there on 18 Apr 1862, and died on 27 Jun 1911 in Agates House, Gardner St., Herstmonceux, Sussex, England, aged 74 years.)
