In Nov 1811 James Brett was co-executor and a residuary legatee of his father's Will.

At the time of the 1841 England Census James Brett, aged about 70, miller, was living in Cowbeach, Herstmonceux Sussex. Present were Mary Brett*, aged about 60, Frederick Harmer (15), miller's ap[prentice], Naomi Husted (15), F[arm] S[ervant], and son William Brett, aged about 25, miller.

* Mary Brett shown above was not James's wife, whose name was Ann and who was with her widowed mother in Wartling at this time.

James Brett of Cowbeech Herstmonceux died aged 74 years (burial record).

  Marriage Information:

James married Ann Avery, daughter of Samuel Avery and Deborah Wenham, on 4 Jul 1810 in Herstmonceux, Sussex, England. (Ann Avery was christened on 7 Feb 1779 in Wartling, Sussex, England and died there on 8 Sep 1860, aged 80 years.)
