BICYCLE FATALITY NEAR KINGSBRIDGE.
BAKER THROWN OVER A BRIDGE.
An inquiry was held at Chillington, on Tuesday by Mr. Sidney Hacker, county coroner, into the death of Mr. Edward Dure, baker, who met with an accident whilst cycling from Kingsbridge to Chillington on May 8th.
Harriet Chapman stated the deceased was 56 years of age. She believed he had a wife living, but nothing was known about her, as she left him a few years ago. Deceased owned a field and cottage. On Wednesday, May 8th, he was brought home in a brake, having met with an accident. He seemed bright and was quite conscious. On Sunday last he took a turn for the worse, and died on Monday. While nursing him he told her he had a smash up at the new (Bowcombe) Bridge, and ran against a pillar at the corner. There were, he said, two conveyances passing over it at the time, and while endeavouring to get out of the way he struck the bridge and fell over it. He did not impute any blame to anyone.
John W. Bowman, baker, Kingsbridge, said deceased had worked for him for twelve months. He saw him after the accident. He said he was trying to pass conveyances, and could not get round the turn, and struck the pillar at the corner, and was thrown over the wall on to the shore. He added that he supposed he was going too fast.
Arthur Frederick Holdsworth, J.P., of Widdicombe House, Stokenham, said the deceased passed him near the Kingsbridge Cemetery, riding a bicycle at a great pace down the hill. When witness reached the bottom, a distance of 500 yards, he saw a bicycle standing end on to the bridge. The front wheel was buckled up, but the back wheel was still revolving. The deceased had fallen clear over the wall, and was lying on his face and hands on the shore, about 10 feet below.
Dr. C. E. Durrant, of Kingsbridge, said the primary cause of death was fracture of the thigh, and the following results. The deceased could not have been better nursed had he been in a hospital.
The jury returned a verdict of 'Accidental death.'
