Bertha GERULFING of Friesland

  • Born: Abt 1058
  • Married: 1072
  • Died: 30 Jul 1093, Montreuil-sur-Mer, Pas-de-Calais, France

  Research Notes:

The Liber Modernorum Regum Francorum records the marriage of "filiam ducis Frisiæ" and "rex Philippus". The Chronologia Johannes de Beke names (in order) "Theodricum et Florencium…et Machtildim" as children of Count Floris & his wife, specifying that "Machtildim" married "Philippus rex Francie" after the death of her father which indicates that "Machtildim" in this text is an error for Bertha. The Historia Francorum names "filiam Florentii ducis Frisonum Bertam" as wife of King Philippe. Her marriage was arranged as part of the settlement under which her future husband recognised her stepfather as Count of Flanders. Her husband sent her to Montreuil after repudiating her. 1

  Marriage Information:

Bertha married Philippe I CAPET, King of France, son of Henri I CAPET, King of the Franks, and Anna Agnesa Yaroslavna RURIK, Grand Duchess of Kiev, in 1072. Philippe repudiated Bertha in 1092. (Philippe I CAPET was born in 1052 in Reims, Champagne-Ardenne, France, died on 29 Jul 1108 in Meulan, Yvelines, Ile-de-France, France and was buried in Abbaye St-Benoit-sur-Loire, Loiret, Orleanais/Centre, France.)
