Phillip BARNICOAT of Wendron
- Christened: 5 Mar 1753, Phillack, Cornwall 1
- Marriage: 8 Apr 1775, Wendron, Cornwall 2
- Buried: 19 Apr 1820, Wendron, Cornwall 2
Orthographic variations: BARNECOURT, BARNICOTE
Research Notes:
According to the burial register, Philip Barnicoat of Wendron died aged 72 years. This would place his birth year in 1748. Allowing for orthographic variations, there is no record of a Philip Barnicoat born between 1746 and 1750. So either Philip was actually born in 1748 and was therefore a son of Sampson by his first wife Grace who died in that year, or else the informant on Philip's death was out by 5 years. Onomastics strongly suggest that Philip was indeed the son of Sampson. Sampson's first wife, Grace Old, is recorded as having had two sons, both named Sampson after their father, and both of whom died as infants in Illogan, the second son dying in Jul 1748 just three months after his mother, aged about 15 months. It is possible Grace had a final son, namely Philip, who wasn't christened until 1753 by which time Sampson Sr. had remarried to Jane King; however, it is far more likely that Grace died as a result of complications arising from the birth of Sampson Jr. There is also the fact that Jane King was the daughter of Philip King, which allows for the possibility that Philip Barnicoat was named after his maternal grandfather.

Philip married Grace HOCKEN on 8 Apr 1775 in Wendron, Cornwall. (Grace HOCKEN was born about 1750 and was buried on 18 Feb 1838 in Wendron, Cornwall, aged 88 years.)
