------------------------------

"The Fatal Accident to a Guard.—The funeral of William Sowton, a guard on the East Cornwall Minerals Railway, who was accidentally killed at Calstock on Wednesday, took place on Friday; and in spite of the rain some hundreds of persons attended to pay their last tribute of respect. Sowton stood high in the esteem of all who knew him, and not a little regard is felt in Calstock at his untimely end. Only last Sunday he was actively engaged in assisting at the Sunday school children's treat, in connection with the Wesleyan Chapel, for which he was a zealous worker. He leaves a wife and three children under the age of five years, unprovided for. A subscription list was opened at the Kelly offices, Calstock, on Saturday, in order to show practical sympathy with the widow, and there can be no doubt that the case is a deserving one." 3
