In 1871, Grace Thorning (32) of Slapton Devonshire, was working as a general servant for Thomas Lock, schoolmaster, at 2 Broadway, Minster, Kent. Son William (6) of Sheerness was boarding with the family of Robert & Elizabeth Wood at 11 Chapel St., Minster.

In 1881, Grace Wallace (41) of Slapton and [2nd] husband Thomas Wallace (42) of Blackawton, gardener, were living in Chapel Lane, Stokefleming. Present were children: Ellen Wallace* (11) of Stokefleming, scholar, Edith Wallace* (9) of Stokefleming, Hester Wallace* (7) of Stokefleming, William Thorning† (16) of Sheerness Kent, painter's apprentice, Florence Thorning† (4) of Stokefleming, John Wallace (4 mos) of Stokefleming.
