"Thrown with great force from the side of a hose carriage when it struck a rockery in Victoria street, at the Intersection of Evelyn street, Melbourne, on the night of January 22, James Hossack, aged 27 years, fireman, stationed at Eastern Hill, fell against an iron electric light standard and received injuries from which he died. Three other firemen, who were also thrown off, fell to the road and were injured. When the accident occurred the detachment was proceeding to investigate a call that was discovered to be a false alarm...." 3
