"IRON RIVER-George "Shelley" S. Moyle, 81, passed away Oct. 20 at his home.
He was born March 10, 1923 in Iron River, the son of the late George and Irene (Beauchamp) Moyle. He was a life long resident and attended the Iron River schools. On Dec. 16, 1941 he enlisted in the Army. He was first sent to Sheppard Field in Wichita Falls, Tex. for basic training, then to Gray Field in Fort Lewis, Wash. There he was trained as a machine gunner and later as a teletype operator. On Sept. 6, 1942 he married the former Lena Delladio in Olympia, Wash., and the couple made their home in Iron River. In February 1943 he transferred to the paratroopers at Fort Benning, Ga., where he received training and wings. He was then moved to Fort Bragg, N.C. into Headquarters, the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute 82nd Airborne Regiment Division. In May 1943 he was shipped overseas to Casablanca, French Morocco, then to Kairuan, Tunisia. He participated in the invasions of Sicily, Italy and Salerno, Italy. From there he went to the countries of Ireland, England and France. He participated in the Normandy Invasion. In June 1944 he jumped at Ste. Mere-Eglise and St. Savour De Val, France, where he was wounded. After being wounded he was sent to Stark Hospital in Charleston, N.C. and later transferred to Lawson Hospital in Atlanta, Ga., where he received honorable discharge on Sept. 14, 1945. He received the combat medal, the Presidential citation, the Purple Heart, the North European citation with three battle stars, the good conduct medal, and the bronze star. He first worked at the City Laundry and Cleaners in Iron River and the Michigan State Liquor Store. He also was a city police officer and served on the city commission. In 1959 he and Dan Applin purchased the City Market from John Basso and Dale Applin. He retired in 1970. After the death of his mother, he served as administrator of Club Elyom in Tipler, Wis. for four years. He was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Iron River, the VFW, the DAV, Blinded Veterans Association, the American Legion Alfred Branchini Post No. 17 of Iron River and the 82nd Airborne Association. He also served on the Veterans Trust Fund Board. He enjoyed flying his plane, scuba diving, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years; four daughters, Pamela Raymond of Iron River, Barbara Hudson of Boise, Id., Shelley (Tim) Bingham of Marquette and Christine (Terry) Phillips of Hayward, Wis.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren...." 2
