"Death of a Pressman. Our obituary notices contain the announcement of the death at Port Victor, at the age of thirty nine years, of Mr. Benjamin Davies, who was well known in the city and Port Adelaide, more particularly in literary, Masonic, and military circles. For a considerable time Mr. Davies had been in ill-health, whioh necessitated his retirement from business and taking up his residence with his relatives in the South. Mr. Davies was introduced to literary work in the office of the Southern Argus at Strathalbyn, and after several years' service there in the days of Mr. Elliott, the father of the present proprietor, he joined the reporting staff of the South Australian Advertiser about fifteen or sixteen years ago. ln June, 1877. he took charge of the Port Adelaide Branch of the Advertiser Office in succession to Mr. F. H. Rix, J.P., now of Hammond, remaining at Port Adelaide ten years, and during the whole of that time was held in high esteem, interesting himself in all movements for the general advancement of the district. Benevolent and charitable institutions received his support, and as Secretary of the Adelaide Lodge No. 2 he was prominently associated with Freemasonry, and did admirable service. He was also a lieutenant in the Port Company of the R.V.F., and for some years was Treasurer of the Counncil of the R.V.F. Few men were better known or more respected than the deceased gentleman in Port Adelaide and the Semaphore particularly, where he resided, his genial and affable disposition securing him many friends. As a Pressman he had many excellent qualities, and was distinguished as a painstaking, enterprising, and energetic journalist. He was gifted with a large sense of humour, and was full of entertaining anecdote. He leaves a wife and two children." 3
