CONCERNING PEOPLE....

Mr. Solomon Jewell, who died at Moonta on July 27, was in the eighty-second year of his age. A native of Crowan, Cornwall, he arrived in South Austraia 62 years ago. The first decade of his colonial life was spent at the Burra. Then, in 1863, he proceeded to the Moonta district, where he resided until the end of his life. He early identified himself with church, social, and public matters in the district. He took an active part in the erection and opening of the first Bible Christian Church and Sunday school at Moonta Mines, and he filled the offices of trustee, lay preacher, class leader, and superintendent. Following upon the survey of the township of Moonta, he removed thence, and throughout his residence was a useful citizen. He filled the office of town Councillor with conspicuous ability for 10 years, representing East and West Wards respectively. The acceptance of the mayoral chair was offered to him on more than one occasion, but that honour he steadfastly declined. Deceased was a Postmaster of the Duke of Edinburgh Lodge of Freemasons, and was a member of the Moonta Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., for about half a century.

He was also returning officer for the local Destitute Board, and vaipator? for the State Bank, but owing to failing health during the past two years he resigned from those positions. Alhough for 12 months prior to his death he was confined to his room, deceased possessed his full mental faculties to the last. For 50 years he was a faithful and forceful lay preacher in the Bible Christian Church. He was twice married, and he has left a widow, one son (Mr. S. Jewell, of Broken Hill). four daughters (Mesdames Fred. Adams of Adelaide, Joseph Rickard, of Broken Hill, George Rowe of Northampton, W.A., and John Dow, of Boulder, W.A.), 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren."
