"Clergyman Who Once 'Humped His Bluey'

ADELAIDE, Tuesday.

Now a religious leader in New Zealand and a doctor of philosophy, the Rev. Cyprus Mitchell, a Unitarian minister who arrived at Outer Harbor in the Largs Bay, "humped his bluey," and for a living, hunted kangaroos ar Green Bushes (Western Australia) when a young man.

Dr. Mitchell is a South Australian. He was born at Coomooroo on the Wallaway Plains. He left there when a boy.

"Few people seem to have heard of the place, and as I know little about it I intend breaking my return journey by train from Perth in six weeks' time to see Coomooroo and visit friends of my youth, at Jamestown," said Dr. Mitchell.

For the past two years he has been in charge of the Unitarian Church at Wellington. He will go to Auckland on his return from his holiday trip to Western Australia.

Dr. Mitchell is going to Narrogin to visit Mr. W. H. Gilchrist, a miner and a former Adelaideian with whom he was associated on the Kalgoorlie goldfields more than 30 years ago.

"I did laboring work at the goldfields, and also on the copperfields at Phillips River, and have happy memories of those days," remarked Dr. Mitchell.

"I had only one 'go' as a miner-at Green Bushes. I must have been the greenest thing about the place, because I dug out the bottom of my 'tin mine' and became the joke of the place."

Dr. Mitchell began his studies in 1905 when 26 years of age. He went to America the same year, and in 1911 secured the Bachelor of Arts degree. Three years later he was a Master of Arts.

He was with the international Y.M.C.A. with the Russian Army towards the close of the war when Communists gained control. He saw the celebrations of the first anniversary of Communist Russia.

Returning to America, Dr. Mitchell was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Divinity in 1923, and in 1931 became a Doctor of Philosophy. 5
