British History Online says that Breightmet had 66 acres of arable land and 709 acres of grassland. The former township of Breightmet lies between Bradshaw and Bradshaw Brook on the West Pennine Moors above Bolton. Its unusual name is thought to be of Saxon origin meaning " a bright meadow". Different spellings of this place name have appeared over the years such as Brihtmede (1257, Brightmete (1277, Breghmete (1292), Brithmete (1302) and Brightmet (1510) Breightmet in its present form as existed since the late 16th century...
