The Chronicle of Abingdon names "Simon regis Henrici dispensator, quia propinquus erat Willelmi, Rainaldi abbatis filii", detailing his agreement with the abbey concerning "ecclesiam de Mercham" and other places. 2

In Ewelme half hundred, Oxon., in 1086 Ranulf Peverel held in Ewelme 2½ hides.

This tenement was long in the possession of the Despensers of Great Rollright, Oxon., whose descent from the time of Domesday has been elaborated by Mr. Round in The King's Serjeants (p. 187).

In 1130 Simon le Despenser was pardoned 60s. of danegeld in Oxfordshire. In 1180 the sheriff of the counties of Nottingham and Derby claimed allowance from his farm of the land of Richard le Boteler (of Warrington) for 51s. 8d. for the half-year in lands given to Thurstan brother of Amaury le Despenser with the daughter of the said Richard, and afterwards of 12½ marks yearly. 3
