  Research Notes:

Henry III King of England ordered "Stephano de Sedgrave" to surrender the manors of "Meleburne, Kirketone, Stauntone, Tingdene, Leland", as well as "Novum Castrum super Linam quod G. filius vester tenet", by letter dated 14 Jun 1234.

Matthew Paris names "…Stephanus de Segrave, specialis regis consiliarius et quasi Angliæ justitiarius…" among those who died in 1241. The Annales Cestrienses record the death in 1241 of “Stephanus de Sagreve”. 1

The king has committed to Stephen of Seagrave and Richard de Brom, clerk , the custody of all lands which pertained to Earl Simon de Montfort in the honour of Leicester within the counties of Warwickshire and Leicestershire , so that they answer at the Exchequer for the issues for as long as it pleases the king, as is more fully contained in the Patent Roll.

To the sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire . The king has committed the honour of Boulogne with appurtenances to Stephen of Seagrave to keep for as long as it pleases the king. Order to exact or take no scutage in the fees of the aforesaid honour, but permit Stephen and his bailiffs to make distraints and collect scutage by their hands without impediment, because he will answer the king for them at the Exchequer.

To the sheriff of Essex and Hertfordshire . Order to cause Stephen of Seagrave to have the moiety of the farms of sergeanties, frankpledges and aids of sheriffs, sursises and perquisites and other issues of the aforesaid counties for half a year, namely from Michaelmas in the seventh year to Easter in the eighth year, so that he might answer the king sufficiently for the moiety of that half-year, namely for a quarter of a year. Alternatively, the sheriff is to retain fully the aforesaid issues of the aforesaid half-year, so that Stephen renders to him that which he receives of the issues of the same half-year, and then the sheriff is to be respondent [answer] to the king for all issues of the whole of the half-year aforesaid.

To the sheriff of Suffolk . Stephen of Seagrave has made fine with the king by 400 m. for having the custody of the land and heirs of Geoffrey de Scalariis , with the marriage of the same heirs, so that Stephen answers the king for all debts that Geoffrey owed the king. Order to cause Stephen to have full seisin without delay of all the lands formerly of Geoffrey in his bailiwick with the chattels formerly of Geoffrey found in the same lands, saving his reasonable testament.

Memorandum that the king has committed the counties of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire to Stephen of Seagrave to keep for as long as it pleases the king, so that Stephen will answer at the Exchequer for the farm of the same counties and the old increment . And the king has granted him all of the profits of the same counties to sustain him in his service for as long as it pleases the king from Michaelmas in the twelfth year.

The king has committed the vacant abbey of Leicester to Stephen of Seagrave to keep for as long as it pleases the king. Order to the sheriff of Leicestershire to cause him to have full seisin of all lands pertaining to that abbey in his bailiwick.

The king has granted his manor of Finedon with all its appurtenances to S. of Seagrave , for his homage and service, to have to the same S. and his heirs from the king and his heirs by a farm of £24, to be rendered to the king per annum at the Exchequer, as more fully in the charter made for him and in the Close Roll.

After 28 Oct 1230

Stephen of Seagrave has made fine with the king by £100 for having the marriage of Emma de Caux, who was the wife of John of Seagrave , in order to marry her to whoever he and his heirs or assigns will wish without disparagement, and for having custody of Emma’s lands for as long as she ought to be in custody according to the law of the land.

26 Nov 1230, Westminster

The king has pardoned to his beloved and faithful Stephen of Seagrave the £100 by which he made fine with him for having the marriage of Emma, daughter of Roger de Caux . Order to cause him to be quit of this.

To the barons of the Exchequer. Order to place in respite, until 15 days from Easter in the twentieth year, the demand for £100 12s. 6d. that they make from Stephen of Seagrave for the time when he was sheriff of Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire, which, it is said, he had concealed and concerning which there is dispute between Stephen and William de Eltindon’ , then his clerk of the same counties, so that it may then be discussed which of them ought to answer the king for the aforesaid debt and concealment of the same.
