“Gillebertus dominus de Aquila” donated property to Beigham Abbey, Sussex, for the souls of “Richerii patris mei” and for the health of “dominæ Edelinæ matris meæ et Richerii fratris mei”, by undated charter, witnessed by “Edelina matre mea, Richerio fratre meo, Engenulfo clerico, fratre meo…”. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1190/91], records "Gilbertus de Aquila" paying "xi l i m…dimidiam marcam pro milite" in Sussex. The Red Book of the Exchequer, listing scutage payments in [1194/95], names "Gilbertus de Aquila" paying "xxi l xvii s vi d de parvis feodis...de quolibet milite xii s vi d" in Sussex. The Testa de Nevill includes a writ of King John dated 1212 which records that "Gileberti de Aquila" owned "villa de Westcot…hundredum de Wudetun" in Surrey before he left for Normandy without the king’s permission. "Gillebertus dominus Aquila" donated property to Notre-Dame de la Trappe by charter dated 1211. “Gislebertus dominus Aquile” donated revenue to Notre-Dame de Chaise-Dieu, with the consent of “Elisabet uxoris mee et Gisleberti primogeniti mei”, by charter dated 1215.
His lands reverted to the crown on his death. 1

Robert Burel, Gilbert de Laigle and William Hardel give the king £10 for summoning Nicholas Deacon of Dunwich , Robert Blofot, Arnald of Diss , Robert son of Ralph, Augustine son of Robert, Augustine son of Buchard, Augustine de Aula, Jocelin son of Richard, Edward son of Richard, Phillip son of Ernald, Constantine son of Lambert, William Brecch’ and Denis son of Ralph before the justices at Westminster at Easter in 15 days to answer Robert Burel for £22 12s. 8d., Gilbert de Laigle for £20, and William Hardel for 26½ m. They have the writ. The sheriff of Suffolk is not ordered to take security, because they have given the king surety for rendering the aforesaid £10 from the first monies by Andrew Bukerel and Bartholomew de St. Martin , citizens of London .

To the sheriff of Sussex . The king has committed to his beloved and faithful Peter Grimbald all land of Gilbert de Laigle in his bailiwick with all chattels found therein, to keep for as long as it pleases the king, to do whatever the king will enjoin upon him by his order. Order to cause Peter to have full seisin of the aforesaid land with appurtenances.
After 4 Dec 1226
Gilbert de Laigle has made fine with the king by 500 m. for having seisin of his lands, which were taken into his hand by his order , wherefore he is to render that fine at these terms, namely 100 m. at Hilary in the eleventh year, 100 m. at the Ascension in the same year, 100 m. at St. Peter in Chains in the same year, and the rest of that fine at Christmas in the twelfth year, so that in that last term that which was taken from the aforesaid lands at the time when they were in the king’s hand is to be allowed to him.

Order to the sheriff of Hampshire to place in respite, until 15 days after Michaelmas in the fifteenth year, the demand of 40s. that he makes by summons of the Exchequer from Gilbert de Laigle for the last tallage of the manor of Greywell , so that it may be inquired whether that manor ought to be quit of the king’s tallages or not.

Order to the sheriffs of Sussex and Surrey to take into the king’s hand all land formerly of Gilbert de Laigle in their bailiwicks and to keep it safely until the king orders otherwise.

The king has committed to John of Gatesden, sheriff of Sussex , all lands formerly of Gilbert de Laigle to keep for as long as it pleases the king, so that he answers for the issues of the same lands at the Exchequer....
