Writ, 9 Sept. 6 Edw. II. [1312]

ESSEX. Inq. Wednesday after the Nativity of the Blessed Mary, 6 Edw. II.

Fingry [alias Fingrith]. The manor (extent given), held of the king in chief by service of guarding the queen’s chamber on the day of the king’s coronation, as chief chamberwoman (cameraria principalis).
Robert de Veer, earl of Oxford, her son, aged 45, is her next heir.

ESSEX. Inq. 13 Oct. 6 Edw. II.

Wlfamston and Gyngen Margaret. A capital messuage, 100a. arable, 4a. meadow, 6a. pasture, 8a. wood, 4l. 2s. 6d. rent of assize, &c. held for life, of the inheritance of John de Warenna, earl of Surrey, son and heir of William de Warenna and Joan his wife to whom they were given in free marriage, of the king in chief by service of finding a damsel to serve the queen on the day of the king’s coronation.

MIDDLESEX. Inq. 5 Oct. 6 Edw. II.

Tyburn. The manor (extent given), held of the abbess of Berkingge by service of 30s. yearly. The said Alice formerly gave the said manor to William de Warrene and Joan his wife, her daughter, in free marriage, to them and the heirs of their bodies, and they regranted it to her for life; the manor ought now to revert to John de Warenne their son and heir, aged 26.

BUCKINGHAM. Inq. Tuesday the eve of All Saints, 6 Edw. II.

Chesham. A capital messuage, a plot of enclosed meadow, 60a. arable, a water-mill, and 69s. 3d. rent, held for life of the king in chief as part of the earldom of Oxford, by the demise of the said William and Joan as abovesaid; and the same ought now to revert to John de Garenne, earl of Surrey and Sussex, aged 22 and more, as their son and next heir.

Order to the same escheator to deliver to Robert de Veer, earl of Oxford, son and heir of Alice de Veer, countess of Oxford, the manor of Fyngrie, which his said mother held in chief, he having done fealty, so that he come to the king to do homage before All Saints next.

20 Nov 1312, Windsor

Order to the escheator on this side Trent,—pursuant to an inquisition made by him shewing that Alice de Veer, countess of Oxford, deceased, tenant in chief, held for life the manors of Teyborn, co. Middlesex, and Chesham, co. Buckingham, and certain lands in Wlphamested and Benges Margarete (sic) of the inheritance of John de Warenna, earl of Surrey, son and heir of William de Warenna and Joan his wife, to whom Alice granted the premises in frank marriage, and afterwards regranted the same to her for life, and that the manor of Chesham is held in chief as part of the earldom of Oxford, and the said lands are held in chief by the service of finding a damsel to serve the queen on the day of the king's coronation, and the manor of Teyborn is held of the abbess of Berkyng by the service of 30s. a year,—to deliver to the said earl the said manors and lands with the issues thereof from the time of the taking of the same into the king's hand, so that he answer therefor if the king will have them; the king having granted to him respite of his fealty and homage due and of his relief until the Purification next.

Alice married Robert DE VERE, 5th Earl of Oxford, son of Hugh DE VERE, 4th Earl of Oxford, and Hawise DE QUINCY, before 22 Feb 1251/2. (Robert DE VERE was born in 1240/1 in Hedinham, Essex, England, died shortly before 7 Sep 1296 and was buried in Earls Colne, Essex, England.)
