There is disagreement concerning the name of the father of Sir William Trussell of Cubblestone (who married Matilda Mainwaring). On the one hand, there are clear references to William as 'William the younger', son of William (e.g. a 1305 Chester Charter and a 1308 grant from William Trussell 'the younger' and Matilda his wife - CPR, Edw. II, v.1, p.47). On the other hand, there is the following excerpt from Collections for a History of Staffordshire, Miliam Salt (ed.), Vol. XII, p. 87:
Pantulf, Baron of Wem, had between 1135 and 1160, been enfeoffed in
Sheriff Hales. In 1255 Alice Paunton held Hales "cum membris " of
Oswestry barony, by service of half a knight's fee : she was the widow of the last Wm. Pantulf of Hales ; and her daughter Roes Pantulf was assigned by John fitz-Alan, their overlord, to the custody of William Trussell, and within five years married Richard Trussell (s. and h. probably of William) who fell fighting at Evesham in A.D. 1265, his widow dying in A.D. 1294, seized of Hales Trussell, or Sheriff Hales, and Cublesdon. Kirby's (or Stanford's) Quest, A.D. 1284, says Roes Trussell held Cublesdon of Wem Barony, by service of finding one foot soldier, with bow and arrow, at Tyrley Castle, for eight days, yearly (see Eyton, Vol. I, pp. 226-230, Staff. Hist. Colls.).
Chetwynd's Pedigree of Pantulf, and Trussell, has some errors, in the
earlier stages : Roes, the Pantulf heiress, married Richard, not Wm. Trussell : and Eyton's descent of Pantulf is more accurate... (italics mine). This, taken in concert with a Stafford Feet of Fines, in which the wife of Richard Trussel, Roes, is arguably Roesia Pantulf:
Date: Westminster, 12 Nov 1261
Complainant: Robert, abbot of Lylleshull
Tenant or Deforciant: Richard Trussel and Roes his wife, and Alice, widow of William Paunton
Subject of Fine and Result: Ten shillings arrears of an annual rent of 10s., and in a plea that the said Richard and Roes should permit him to have reasonable estovers in his wood of Hales. The defendants did not appear, and had made numerous defaults. The Sheriff is ordered to distrain them by their lands, &c.
