OBITUARY MR WILLIAM LOCHHEAD.
The death of Mr William Lochhead, who passed away in Christchurch yesterday at the age of 60 years, after having undergone an operation a day or two ago, removes one of the most popular members of a local body in the Ashburton County. Although it was not until recently that he began to take an active interest in local body affairs, he has always been a well-known figure about the County, and his genial manner and earnestness earned him the respect of all. The late Mr Lochhead came to New Zealand from the South of Scotlandd when a young man, and settled in Canterbury. He was engaged in farming in various parts of the province until about 1900, when he went to Dorie to manage a property. Subsequently he bought the property which he has farmed successfully ever since. In 1917 he was elected to represent the Mount Somers Riding on the Ashburton County Council, and he was re-elected in 1920. In November, 1920, he was also appointed by the County Council to be one of its representatives on the Ashburton County Hospital Board. He held both of these public positions up till his death, and was greatly esteemed by his fellow-members on each as a capable and willing worker. The wife of the late Mr Lochhead pre-deceased him a short while ago, but he leaves a large family. Flags on business premises and public buildings were flown at half-mast to-day as a mark of respect." 4
