Philip was probably a close relation of the Minnett (Minnet, Minett, Minnitt) family living in Wenvoe during the 1740s and in St. Andrews Major during the 1750s. The parents of this family were John Minnet and Ann Gwillim, who married in 1744 in St. Andrews. Philip was born four years before their marriage such that he was probably either a nephew of John Minnet or his son by an earlier marriage.
