"JAMES LAMBIE

The death occurred at his residence, Lake road, on Sunday, of one of the early settlers of the Lakeside district, Mr James Lambie, in his 83rd year. He was the third son of Mr John Lambie, and was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1851. The other sons were John, Robert and William. Mr Lambie was 13 years old when he accompanied his parents to New Zealand, arriving at Port Chalmers in the ship 'Peter Denny'. They afterwards came on to this district, where the elder brother, Mr John Lambie, junr., was farming at Doyleston. Mr Lambie, senr., purchased the property at Lakeside, where he became a successful farmer. Mr James Lambie spent the remainder of his life in the Ellesmere district, and was educated at Leeston School. He was his father's assistant before setting up on his own account on land which formed part of his father's property. Both his father and he had to contend with all the privations of pioneering, but their practical natures and experience in farming helped them soon to turn their holdings into productive farms. About 14 years ago Mr Lambie came to Leeston to reside, acquiring a home on a property on Lake road. Mr Lambie was keenly interested in sport of all kinds and was for many years an enthusiastic member of the Southbridge Bowling Club. He did not take a prominent part in public affairs, although he was keenly interested in them, but he was for some years a member of the Lakeside School Committee, also a member of the Ellesmere A. and P. Association. He was also a good athlete in his younger days, a runner over the mile; also a wrestler of no small ability.

The news of his death will be received with regret by a very large circle of friends in the Ellesmere district, where Mr Lambie was held in the highest respect for his many estimable qualities as a man and as a farmer, for his opinions and advice on farming matters were always reliable and were freely sought by his neighbours and friends. He is survived by his wife (nee Elizabeth McLachlan) and by seven of a family of eight children, three sons and four daughters. The sons, Robert, William and James, are well-known farmers in the Lakeside district, and the daughters are Mrs Henry Jamieson, of Balcairn, Mrs A. Kemp, New Brighton, Miss J. Lambie, matron of Bottle Lake Hospital, Christchurch, and Miss I. Lambie, of Leeston.

The funeral took place at the Ellesmere Cemetery this afternoon, the large and representative assemblage around the grave testifying to the high regard in which the late Mr James Lambie was held. There was a short service at the house which was conducted by the Rev. D. N. Pryor, who also conducted the service at the graveside. The bearers were Messrs. W. Jamieson, A. Lochhead, D. Kemp, W. Lambie, R. McLachlan and J. Lambie." 3
