In 1851 John Mottley (51) of Grentham, widower, farmer of 286 acres employing 6 labourers, was living in Little Grimsby. Present were children Runnard (26) of Fulstow, farmer of 120 acres employing 4 labourers, George (21) of Fulstow, ag. lab., Brian (18) of Fulstow, ag. lab., Betsey (15) of Grentham, and two servants.

In 1861 John Motley (61) of Covenham St. Mary, farmer of 180 acres, widower, was living in Covenham St Mary. Present were son-in-law Henry Robinson (30) of East Torrington, farmer of 56 acres, daughter Betsey Robinson (24) of Covenham St. Mary, married, granddaughter Ann A. Motley (4) of Fulstow was visiting, three servants.

In 1871 John Motley (71) of Covenham St. Mary, retired farmer, and [2nd] wife Mary (68) of Fulstow, were living in Covenham St. Mary.
