Philip Richards Carlyon died aged 30 years. 2

COLDSTREAM GUARDSMAN BURIED AT BENTON.
The funeral took place at Benton Churchyard on Thursday, September 25th, of ex-Guardsman Private Philip Carlyon, who passed away at the residence of his parents, Forest Villa, Forest Hall, on Sunday, the 21st. Private Carlyon joined the Coldstream Guards in 1915 and after training at Caterham and Windsor went to France, where he was in several engagements, until he was wounded at Paschendale in October, 1917. He was sent to Lincoln Hospital and, like his brother Norman, who died January, 1917, was transferred to the 1st Northern General at Newcastle.
After being discharged from hospital he went to the Fellside Sanatorium, Hexham, in February last, and stayed until June. After leaving there he gradually got worse and passed away as stated. The funeral, which was a military one, was conducted by the Rev. Mark Fletcher, Vicar of Benton, assisted by the Rev. A. Simpson, curate.
Prior to leaving the house a short service was held by Mr. Sanderson. The coffin, which was of polished elm, was placed in the same grave as his brother, Trooper Norman Carlyon, of the Northumberland Hussars, in a plot of ground set aside for men who have given their lives for King and Country.
The chief mourners were father and mother, Mrs. Newell, sister; Mr. E. Carlyon, brother; Miss Carlyon, sister; Mr. Daddy, cousin (Stockton), Mr. Newell, brother-in-law; Mr. Simpson (Durham), Mr. and Mrs. Stephens (Heaton), Mr. Harris (Birtley), Mr. Fenwick (Whitley Bay), Mrs. Richardson (Gateshead), Mrs. Simpson, Mrs. Bunce (Durham), Miss Pearson (Gateshead), Mr. Miller (Shields), Mr. Embleton (Sunderland), Mr. Hogg (Newcastle), Messrs. Trewick, Pitt, Ferguson, Flint, Spearman, Sanderson, Hankin, Hutchinson, J. Trewick, Hall, Spence, Bean, Hodgson, Thompson, Durey, T. Campbell....
