"Mr, James Gum, who died at Nairne on Saturday evening, after a long illness, was one of the oldest residents. He was born near Nairne on June 14, 1849 [sic], and therefore was more than 78 years of age. Mr. Gum was the third son of the late Mr. William Gum, of Nairne, and was educated there by the late Mr. Joseph Ryder. In his youth he drove 10 bullocks attached to a wagon from the copper mines at Callington and Kanmantoo to Scott's Creek smelting furnace. After the ore had been treated he conveyed the copper to Adelaide, the journey occupying two days. He also carted flour for John Dunn & Co., Nairne, to Adelaide, and brought back goods for the township. Mr. Gum went to Redhill in 1870, and was one of the earliest settlers there. He took up land near Amyton, Hundred of Pinda, and near Bruce. He farmed there for over 40 years, and had to contend with many hardships... Mr. Gum was married to Miss Mary Jane Nicholls of Nairne, 47 years ago. Mrs. Gum is living, and the sons and daughters are Messrs. Albert Gum (Kuryi kompila, west coast), Hurtles James Gum (Littlehampton), and Ernest Victoria Gum (Walloway, Orroroo), Mrs. A. McLean (Smoky Bay), Mrs. E. W. Allan (Auburn), Mrs. D.
